An example of sacred geography, this map from 1581 placed Jerusalem in the middle of the old world, while not knowing what to do with the new world, labeled America.

Also known as the Bünting Cloverleaf Map, (German title: “Die ganze Welt in einem Kleberblat/Welches ist der Stadt Hannover meines lieben Vaterlandes Wapen”) this historic mappa mundi was drawn by the German Protestant pastor, theologian, and cartographer Heinrich Bünting.

Notice the Red Sea is colored red, and that sirens inhabit the Indian Ocean, while beasts inhabit the oceans near Africa and America.

This map was published in his book Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae (Travel Book of Holy Scripture) in 1581.
